What Tabletop Should I Use With My ConSet Desk?

Posted by Robin Griffith on 27th Mar 2026

ConSet offers a wide range of height-adjustable desk bases known for their quality and reliability. While the bases provide the core functionality, selecting the right table top is essential for aesthetic appeal and practical use. We provide several standard size and color options, as well as guidance on using third-party tops for maximum flexibility.

ConSet Table Top Options

Our standard table tops are designed to perfectly complement our desk bases, ensuring easy installation and optimal performance. While we offer small and irregular shaped table tops, the most common option is a rectangular table top that provides an ample work space for home or office use.

Using Third-Party Table Tops

One of the great advantages of ConSet motorized bases is their versatility. You are not limited to our standard table tops and can use nearly any top you prefer, provided it meets a few critical dimensional and weight requirements. This allows for complete customization, from reclaimed wood to unique shapes and materials.

Limitations and Requirements for Third-Party Tops

Size Constraints

The table top must extend over the frame of the desk base by a specific amount for stability and aesthetic balance.

Minimum Length/Width: The top must be at least 4 inches longer and 4 inches wider than the dimensions of the base frame it is mounted to. This ensures adequate space for mounting brackets and prevents tipping when the base is at full height.

Maximum Length/Width: Consult the specific base model's specifications (e.g., ConSet 501-19, 501-25) for the absolute maximum supported dimensions. Exceeding these limits can strain the motors and compromise stability, especially at higher settings.

Thickness and Weight

The stability and motor performance are directly related to the top's weight and rigidity.

Minimum Thickness: We strongly recommend a minimum thickness of 3/4 inch (0.75") for standard MDF or solid wood tops to prevent warping and ensure adequate screw retention during mounting. Thinner materials may require reinforcement.

Maximum Weight Capacity: Do not exceed the specified weight capacity of your ConSet base. This limit includes the weight of the top itself plus all equipment placed on the desk (monitors, computers, accessories). Exceeding the limit will void the warranty and can lead to motor failure. The typical dynamic weight capacity for most ConSet bases ranges from 150 lbs to 220 lbs, but always check your model's manual.

Mounting

Screws: Use wood screws of appropriate length (typically 5/8" to 3/4") that will penetrate the top adequately without poking through the surface. Pre-drilling pilot holes is highly recommended to prevent splitting, especially with solid wood or bamboo tops.

Pre-existing Holes: If using a previously drilled top, ensure the holes align with the ConSet base frame's mounting brackets. If they do not, you must use a fresh, undrilled area of the top.

By keeping these limitations in mind, you can confidently choose a third-party table top that perfectly suits your style while maintaining the high performance of your ConSet height-adjustable desk base.
